ZINE (FALL 2022)

1st Example Page, “Frilled Shark”
2nd Example page, “Bull Shark”
2 Page Spread, “Oarfish”

Brief

For an introductory art foundations class, each of us were tasked with creating a Zine of any topic.  A zine is a small booklet, usually created with minimal funding, that focuses on a specific topic or interest.  Made in about 1-2 weeks, my 10 page black-and-white zine focused on illustrating the scariest fishes I could think of.

Goal

Working entirely in black and white, the zine served as a good project for expanding my knowledge on how to work without color yet still convey shading and texture effectively. Physical methods of binding books together, which could even include sewing the middle bind.

Methods

  • I started by listing and researching types of fish that could make the cut for the zine, having the list be made up of a mix of personal opinion and facts on the fish’s behavior and lethality.
  • I did each page separately, and repeated these steps:
    • Sketched out the fish onto a digital canvas.
    • Illustrated the lineart onto another layer.
    • Added the halftoning and shading.
    • Final details.
  • When all the pages were completed I printed out multiple copies, folded the pages, and stapled them in the middle bind.
